Randy, are you sure the Ludwig's are seamed? AFAIK, they are still using seamless shells as always. I'm curious to know because I love those drums. Ludwig is under-rated IMO.
i could be wrong Derek, for some reason i thought those were seamed.
and to answer the question about the weckl drum, correct those are not made anymore at the moment.
I tried out the new Yamaha copper nouveau snare (14x5.5) and it just kills. Great tone, power, but not as harsh as most metal drums. Copper is softer than steel, brass and aluminum. It sounds almost like maple with just a hint of metalic tembre.

A Yamaha 6" maple is a great choice. If you have the chance to hit a few of the same size and make you will hear a huge difference in sound. When I worked at Musicians Institute in Hollywood they had one that sounded like god and everyone who played that drum including guest artists played that snare drum and loved it. It had a crack to it like no other. It cut like hell and had a good enough tone. But the crack was like hell yes. Go with Maple if you are going country bra. Metal is a different animal. Stay with wood. That is what the rest of the drums are made out of. Since when have you heard of a metal tom tom?
The Paul Leim snare was introduced a few years ago........something to note, be on the look for the older version of this snare. The newer versions are SEEMED shells, not seamless like the original such as mine,.
Something to consider when looking at say a BB with a cost of 600+, those shells are not seamless and neither are Dunnett shells.
Not to say the Dunnett snares are bad for I own 2, but if are going to compare drums, you need to understand the difference in how the shell is made and not the price tag.
retail on the original PL snare was 900 something, retail on a Dunnett is 900 something, seamed verse seamless........1 is handmade 1 is machined.
Your paying money for a seamless shell, the other you are paying for the labor of 1 guy building you a custom snare.
I have mentioned this here before, but ALL Yamaha metal snares are now seamed shells........if you want a killer snare, the Weckl aluminum is the best all purpose snare IMO. slap a really nice wood hoop on top...........again, it's now seamed so look on ebay.
